The ASEAN
member countries are looking forward to establish a strategic partnership with
India in the days to come in the larger interest of peace, progress and shared
prosperity in the region, the ASEAN Economic Ministers Chair Cham Prasidh said
in Guwahati on December 17, 2012.
Speaking
at the conclusion of the 8,000 km ASEAN India car rally on Dec. 17 Prasidh,
also senior commerce minister of Cambodia, said that while ASEAN's engagement with India had conclusion of the
just completed 20 years, the 10-nation
regional group was looking at Indian PM Manmohan Singh to announce elevation of
the ASEAN-India relationship to a strategic level.
"While
today's arrival of the ASEAN-India car rally is a historic landmark in our
relationship with India, we are looking ahead to the leaders of ASEAN joining
the Indian Prime Minister in a commemorative Summit between ASEAN and India to
mark the 20th year of our relationship. We are going to see in next three days
our leaders announcing that our relationship would be elevated to another level
which is strategic partnership level," Prasidh said.
Describing
the Northeast as a gateway between India and ASEAN, Prasidh also said that the
meeting of ASEAN representatives with leaders from the Northeastern states was
the beginning of another chapter for building up ASEAN-India relationship.
Earlier,
welcoming the ASEAN representatives, D. Purandeswari, MoS for Commerce,
described the car rally as one that would help further promote trade, commerce
and tourism. The 31 cars that took part in the rally had arrived here on
December 16 evening through Myanmar.
