MYANMAR ESTABLISHES DIPLOMATIC LIES WITH ARMENIA
Myanmar
has established diplomatic ties with Armenia, official
media reported Armenia is the first country that Myanmar forged links in the new year of 2013 after Malawi, Bhutan,
Luxembourg, Latvia, Estonia and Iceland in 2012, reported Xinhua. A joint communique was signed between Myanmar's permanent representative to the UN and counterpart of
Armenia in New York on January 31.
PAK LEAST FORWARD LOOKING COUNTRY, SAYS GOOGLE
Pakistanis are the least forward-thinking
people in the world, according to a research. The scientists
who correlated data from Google searches and national economic
performance, found Germany to be at the top of the list. The team
first published a set of results last year, with Pakistan at the
bottom of the list and Britain at the top of the list, as people
looked forward to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. The researchers
found this by referring the ‘mammoth amounts of data’ generated by internet
use.
BHUTAN TO BECOME WORLD’S FIRST TO TURN TOTALLY ORGANIC
Bhutan will become the first country to
produce exclusively organic food, after banning the sale of pesticides and
herbicides relying only on animal and farm waste to fertilize crops. The
country is already largely organic, but with this change Bhutan expects to be
able to grow more.
CHINA REMAINS TOP GOLD PRODUCER FOR SIXTH YEAR
China produced the most gold in the world’s
last year, making it the largest producer for the sixth year even as it
remained the second largest consumer after India. China’s gold output rose from
11.7% to a record 403 tonnes in 2012, China Gold Association has said.
SOUTH KOREA OFFICIALLY JOINS UN SANCTIONS AGAINST NORTH
KOREA
South Korea on February 7, 2013 confirmed it
would implement the latest UN sanctions imposed on North Korea, despite dire
warnings from Pyongyang about the consequences. The sanctions were ordered in
response to the North’s long range rocket launch in December and prompted
Pyongyang into threatening an imminent nuclear test.
PAK TESTS NUCLEAR CAPABLE HATH-II MISSILE
Pakistan on Feb 15, 2013 successfully tested
the nuclear capable Hatf-II ballistic missile with a range of 180 km, marking
the second test of a missile system in four days as part of measures to
evaluate the capabilities of its Strategic Forces.
SOUTH KOREA FLEXES MUSCLES WITH NAVAL EXERCISES
South Korea staged a naval exercise involving
US surveillance aircraft on Feb. 19, 2013 flexing its military muscles at a
time of high tensions on the Korean Peninsula following the North’s third
nuclear test. Day one of six-day drill in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) involved
South Korean warships and submarines, as well as surveillance planes from US,
the defence ministry said.
INDIA TO INK THE BIGGEST FIGHTER JET CONTRACT BY MID-YEAR
A day after Defence Minister A. K. Antony
asked the armed forces to gear up for a cut in military
spending, Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne said
that India was on track to ink the world's biggest fighter
jet contract by the middle of the year.
India
had last year picked French
firm Dassault Aviation's Rafale fighter jet over Eurofighter Typhoon in a
hotly-contested $ 18 billion (T 99,000 crore) contract
to equip the Indian Air Force
with 126 advanced combat aircraft. The IAF chief said, "The major part of contract negotiations
is over. We are now discussing what work share Hindustan Aeronautics Limited will have."
