PEOPLE WHO PASSED AWAY
GANESH PYNE
Acclaimed painter Ganesh Pyne passed away on March 11, 2013 in Kolkata following cardiac arrest. He was 76. Pyne received international fame for his experiments with all forms of media, particularly the tempera. His demise marks the end of an era. The twin talents of Ganesh Pyne and Bikash Bhattacharjee (1940-2006) reestablished Bengal art in the Indian art market in the sixties, when their works started drawing big money. Pyne joined the Society for Contemporary Artists movement in the later phase and soon became the most prominent face of the movement. Pyne made us proud of Bengal art and paved the way for next generation artists to get national attention.
LENG SARY
Leng Sary, who was standing trial for crimes against humanity during his time as the Khmer Rouge's Foreign Minister in Cambodia in the 1970s, died recently, the Court said. Leng Sary's death will dismay victims of the regime who fear those most responsible for their suffering will escape justice. An estimated 1.7 million people died during the ultra-maoist 'killing fields' revolution of the Khmer Rouge.
