IRAN, PAKISTAN LEADERS INAUGURATE GAS PIPELINE PROJECT
They defy the United States. The US had called on Pakistan to abandon the project.
India had quit in 2009. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari on March 11, 2013 inaugurated the much delayed section of a $ 7.5 billion gas pipeline, despite the US threat of possible sanctions over Tehran's nuclear programme. The inauguration ceremony was held for the Pakistani section of the pipeline in the Iranian city of Chabahar near the Pak-Iran border.
The ground breaking ceremony marked the start of work on the 781 km Pakistani section of the pipeline.
Iran will provide a $ 500 million loan for the project: The pipeline on the Iranian side is almost complete.
According to officials of at Iran's Oil Ministry, construction of the project, Peace Pipeline, will take two years.
The President in a joint statement said that 'the completion of the pipeline is in the interests of peace, security and progress of the two countries ... it will also consolidate the economic, political and security ties of the
two nations.'
