JUSTICE VERMA SUBMITS REPORTS ON RAPE LAW [Sexual assault cases must be tried by women judges]
The Justice J. S. Verma Committee set up to propose amendments to laws relating to crime against women, on January 23, 2013, submitted its report to the home ministry. Sexual violence and gender bias was the key focus of the report.
Panel wants the govt. to assure time-bound implementation of its report. Panel also wants that sexual assault cases must be tried by women judges and says country needs better governance not new laws. It presses for `urgent implementation' of police reforms.
It suggests life imprisonment for the rapist and hanging only in the rarest of the rare cases. Headed by former Chief Justice of India J. S. Verma, the panel had former Himachal Chief Justice Leila Seth and former Solicitor General Gopal Subramanian as its members.
The panel was formed late in December 2012 amid demands for the greater protection for women after brutal assault of a 23 year old student by six rapists after she boarded a bus in New Delhi.
